National Campesino Cultures Meeting

Colombia - 29 October, 2014

From 29-31 October 2014 the National Campesino Cultures Meeting will take place in Curití (Santander). The meeting will provide an opportunity to express and debate the great variety of cultural expressions of farmers (campesinos) in Colombia and for the recognition of the knowledge and practices of rural communities around the country.

The purpose of the meeting is to promote an exchange of experiences, from a thematic and methodological perspective, of the campesino cultural manifestations from the different regions in Colombia. There will be discussions about the campesino productive systems, seed management, gastronomy and traditional medicine, social organizations, management of natural resources, forms for the transmission of knowledge, memory, myths and local legends, knowledge and practices related to crafts, tools and construction.

The event will be attended by two hundred participants who will showcase the campesino Intangible Cultural Heritage, and by representatives from academic, governmental and non-governmental institutions who have been studying the cultural rights of these communities. This will be a great festival of the campesino knowledge and practices, further complemented by dance and music shows and exhibitions of gastronomy and handicrafts.

The meeting is expected to provide recommendations to the Ministry of Culture and its policy for Intangible Cultural Heritage, with special regard to the following aspects: the campesino culture as a right; territory, agrobiodiversity and campesino culture; tourism, services and campesino culture; campesino families, domestic economy and intergenerational relationships; campesino gastronomy and food security; women and their role in the sustainability of the campesino culture and practices and trades in the frame of peace negotiations.

The National Campesino Cultures Meeting is organized by the Colombian Ministry of Culture and TBI Colombia in the framework of a project aimed at strengthening rural, campesino and indigenous communities in managing their intangible cultural heritage. This project intends to facilitate the implementation of the Ministry of Culture’s Intangible Cultural Heritage policy by integrating the local perspective of communities into it.
