New Directions in National Forest Policy

New Directions in National Forest Policy

Viet Nam - 10 November, 2010

On 26 October 2010, the Forest Science Institute of Viet Nam (FSIV) cooperated with the Science Technology and Environment Department/ MARD and Tropenbos International Viet Nam programme (TBI Viet Nam) to organize a national workshop in Ha Noi.

The aim of the workshop was to gather comments for the improved National Forest Research Strategy Action Plan (NFRSAP) for the period of 2011-2020, which will then be submitted to MARD for approval.

Participating at the workshop were managers, policy makers and international and national experts in relevant fields. The workshop also witnessed the attendance of representatives from universities, research institutes, companies and private entities with relevant ideas and inputs.

The workshop was part of a series of consultation sessions based on the technical and financial support of TBI Viet Nam over the last two years. At this important event, participants actively discussed on advances in technology and prioritized policies and programmes while taking into account the aspects of REDD and climate change. In addition, the discussion also looked at ways to mobilize funds for research, as well as proposed strategies for specific fields.

Once the Action Plan is approved by MARD, it will serve as a policy framework for forest research programmes/projects in Viet Nam in the future. It will also serve as the basis for carrying out forestry research activities to meet targets and priorities of the sector.

With a wide range of participants from the national to local levels, the workshop was a great chance to collect useful advice for improvement of the existing Action Plan.
